John A. Kanis, International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) President since 2008, has stepped down, passing on the distinguished role to President-elect Cyrus Cooper, Member of Echolight SPA Scientific Advisory Board.

Professor Cyrus Cooper stated: “We owe a debt of gratitude to John Kanis, whose tenure saw the Foundation grow and advance in so many ways. Under his leadership the Foundation became a truly global entity with equitable regional representation in governance. It is now a leading reference within the bone field, with enormous influence in science and advocacy. With 237 patient and medical society members under its umbrella, and numerous world-class programmes, IOF plays a key role in medical education and patient outreach. All these achievements are largely due to John Kanis’ leadership since 2008.”

Professor Cyrus Cooper, formerly Chairman of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, is also Chair of the MRC Population Health Sciences Research Network; Associate Director of Research at the University of Southampton Medical School; and Associate Editor of the journal Osteoporosis InternationalHe has published over 630 research papers on osteoporosis and rheumatic disorders and has been identified recently as among the 400 most influential biomedical researchers worldwide and one of the highest ranked within the bone field.
Since 2017 he is also Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Echolight Spa, an innovative biomed company developing the fist radiation free bone densitometer for the diagnosis of osteoporosis at lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck.
