Highlight:
Spinal conditions such as osteoarthritis, vertebral fractures, vertebroplasty are known to result in an overestimation of the BMD parameter when calculated by the traditional bone densitometry DXA. In this study, 86 women underwent REMS and DXA scan on both axial sites, showing a high correlation between the two methods regarding the femoral results, but not on the lumbar site, where REMS resulted in a significant lower BMD compared to DXA. The study proves the high reliability of REMS in BMD estimation, being more accurate then DXA in patients carrying spinal conditions and therefore, widening towards new clinical applications.
