Highlight:

The aim of the study was to compare the Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry (REMS)-based bone mineral density (BMD) values of lumbar spine and femoral neck between pre- and post-menopausal women. A total of 165 women underwent an echographic scan of lumbar spine and femoral neck by using REMS technology. The REMS scans were performed in two Bulgarian centers. For each patient, the following data were recorded: age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and REMS-based BMD of lumbar spine, femoral neck, trochanter and total hip. The mean BMD value measured by REMS in post-menopausal group for lumbar spine were significantly lower than those of the pre-menopausal group. REMS-measured BMD at femoral neck, trochanter and total hip also differed significantly between the pre-menopausal and post-menopausal group.
